November 25, 2012 at 6:44 pm #214554Adoboers, we are booked for this ride! I just confirmed today with the outdoor shop for the trip. We will be picked up at the IMAX Theater Parking Lot in Cathedral City at 730 AM. The shuttle fee is $30/rider. Please bring exact amount in cash. I booked for 8 riders but their van and trailer can accommodate up to 15 riders! Still room for more riders! The shuttle ride takes about 45 minutes up, so we will start riding around 830 AM max.

November 26, 2012 at 3:01 pm #214557Update #2:
Per XT’s suggestion to start riding early, assembly time is now re-scheduled to 7AM sharp. Please have pack, gear, and bike ready to load on the trailer so we can leave for the shuttle drop-off asap. Pick-up time is around 7AM-715AM. The sooner we are ready, the sooner we can leave. Please have $30 cash ready as well.
Pick-up area:
68594 Ave Lalo Guerrero, Cathedral City, CA. It is a Public Parking building just behind the IMAX Theater. The van and trailer will be parked in front or near the building.
November 26, 2012 at 7:07 pm #214560Tips from Paul, a friend who rides Palm Canyon a lot.
=============================================================
The key to this ride is to treat it like a marathon not a sprint. Stop often and eat a little. Keep moving but don’t go for long distances without quick food and water breaks. By the same token don’t make them long stops or you will run out of daylight this time of year. Also a key is not to leave anyone behind especially if they don’t know the route. There are many places one can make a wrong turn.November 27, 2012 at 12:47 pm #214561More tips from Paul
=============================================================
Everyone should have 2 tubes even if running tubeless. Sidewall cuts happen as do large rock punctures. I carry a spare Shimano derailleur. There should be a Scram in the group. Course everyone should have a spare hanger and quick link. 100 oz of water maybe more if they sweat a lot. Really low humidity out there so you dehydrate faster than normal.Bring something for bad weather and make the decision whether to take it at the top. Remember the weather can change out there real fast (watch one of my Art Smith videos on YouTube). Bring lots of snack foods.
We usually stop for a short lunch break in the sand wash where Vanderenter leaves off so we have some additional fuel for the climb up to the tractor (6% for another 2+ miles sometimes really soft). Exposed skin will bleed. Everything growing out there has a thorn on it. I like to wear shin guard that come down to the top of my shoe. Bushes have grown a lot during the summer. We cut a bunch back a week or so ago but no way to ride without scrapes and scratches without protection.
Lots of real soft sand this year from the summer floods. Big front tire is really helpful.
November 27, 2012 at 4:17 pm #214562As I mentioned to Xandei this morning we should pick up and end at Von’s. That is where the trail ends and the last thing we want to do is ride down the pavement after being out in the desert for 6 or more hours. I believe he is going to make the change?
While it is prudent to warn everyone about the pitfalls of the ride it is the most awesome ride in So Cal. It does however deserve the up most respect as it can be deadly. No need to carry a water filter unless the storms in the next couple of days are quite strong (not predicted to be). The river is dry right now so bring plenty of water. If the sun happens to be behind clouds my water consumption drops big time. If out however for some 100 oz might not be enough so plan accordingly. If you can carry extra water on the bike it saves your back.
Especially if sunny, cramps may be a problem for some. I will bring some of my “cramp pills” (Tabalytes)some of you want. They are $12 for a bottle of 90. For those that don’t know what I’m talking about ask those that witnessed the miracle in action at Santa Barbara.
Because of the length of time on the bike I don’t recommend a full face helmet. While some of the terrain could demand one the weight and extra heat, for me, makes one not an option. Again know yourself.
For those that have a look at the maps on http://www.mountainbikebill.com/PalmCanyon.htm site there are 2 sections. If you have a look at the map that is the NorthMap PC-29 is about the half way point and a place to take a short lunch break. The trip on up the red line is where it becomes tougher. If you aren’t feeling it you can turn off on the green line (Vanderenter Trail) and hook up with the group again at PC-34. There is a sign post there. You will probably beat the crew doing the red trail by about 50 minutes. If you feel good by all means do Hahn Buena Vista. The climb up the sand wash to the beginning of Hahn is about 1100+ ft.
I would strongly suggest you read Bill’s narrative and follow on the map before you go. You won’t remember it all but you will some of it. The planned route we will take is the red line, with the exception of Fern starting at PC-FERN.
The only bailout on the ride is at PC-43 out Dunn Road about 21 miles in. Some of the most technical and fun riding comes at the end so save yourself early.

November 29, 2012 at 11:44 am #214568Last time I was in the area, not in this epic route, it was June with 90ish weather. I ran out of water & more miles to go, was dehydrated, said my prayers, I thought it was my time. Xandei joked about choosing between a drop of water & a million bucks, I said I take a drop of water so I cant stress enough to bring lots of water & among other things.
November 29, 2012 at 4:02 pm #214569Have fun guys…I’m jealous…How I wish I can go…daym!
