Hey Dennis! Check out the link below:http://www.unitedadobo.com/index.cfm?action=events.detailsevent_id=704This is a ride that we did a few months back around the Backbone Trail area. Maybe you can get some preliminary info about your planned ride from there.
November 23, 2009 at 11:13 pm #211923Hey Dennis, Welcome to UA. We’ve been exchanging pm’s in STR but I only know you as metalmtbr 🙂 Enjoy your stay!
November 25, 2009 at 9:21 am #211929Hey Jason. Yeah, I remember you. Good to see you here as well. We still need to get together and ride. How’s your Giant Trance? One of my riding buddies just got a brand new Giant Trance X3 and he loves it.
November 28, 2009 at 8:46 am #211937Thanks Ron for the info. XT supplied me two links with trail info. One was for Backbone to Sandstone but opted for Backbone to Corral Canyon. We didn’t know what to expect and we figured if we got lost, we got lost together. I got as much recon info as I could (study, study) and also downloaded the GPX file for the trail from venturacountytrails (from Steve Clark who runs the site) to my iPhone running the Trails app. We used it to keep our bearings and it showed us exactly where we were on the trail the entire time (except one time we were in a canopy of trees and GPS couldn’t find us). We went for it and I’m happy to report that my buddies and I LOVED the trail. Can’t believe that it’s in our own backyard. It had a little bit of everything and lots challenging climbs. The scenery was beautiful. The downhill from the top of Latigo was an absolute blast!! We hope to ride other sections of Backbone in the near future (a little help, Juan? 🙂 ) and then maybe in Spring link them altogether for a major epic ride (just riding from one end to the other and shuttling back). Anyway, here’s the GPS summary from my Garmin Edge. Brutal but very enjoyable ride. My legs are a bit sore still. My buddies and I agree that this is the best of ALL the trails we’ve ridden in the area as far as technicality, trail beauty, climbs, downhill flows. http://bit.ly/5Ah5gF
November 28, 2009 at 9:24 am #211938Dennis, that stretch of Backbone is one of my favorites. If anyone is up for an epic ride, let me know. I start at the Kanan 3rd Tunnel parking lot (where you started) and ride up the opposite way to Sandstone Peak. An incredible out-n-back ride with great views and lots of climbing. Close to 5000 feet of climbing over 34 miles. Of course, there are other trailheads on this route to Sandstone that can make the ride a little less epic.

November 29, 2009 at 6:07 pm #211940Not sure why my comments double-posted. Sorry. Sandstone sounds like fun. We’ll definitely do Backbone again. I had about 4 min of miscellaneous video recording (nothing too technical) I did on my Canon Point-n-shoot camera so I decided to pull it into iMovie on my Mac and clean it up a little. Here’s the result 🙂 http://bit.ly/7lEiL6
